It works - but not in the "dirty" hovercraft environment with air-cooled engines where it acts as a muck-magnet allowing various types of debris (grass, seaweed, grit, sand ...) to closely attach itself to the electrical bits (where it then acts as a sponge for any water around).  Any coating used needs to be non-sticky (high voltage lacquers or dry PTFE) if you don't want to have to re-apply it every time you use the craft - grease also washes off with spray or when/if you wash the craft.

I've never had any issues with HT leads at all - they seem to be pretty good nowadays (better quality plastics and more control over the voltage?).  The weak points are where they terminate (plug caps and distributor/coil pack) where additional (dry!) sealing is needed.

One thing I would like to add is the use of Silicon Dielectric Grease to protect electrical connections, in particular on HT leads (both ends) It will not only keep water out it will prevent "tracking" down the spark plug. Ford started using it particularly to stop tracking down the outside of the plug in the high output ignition systems. It is also ok with high temperatures, at least 200C.

Might be worth a re-read of THIS document (the water test is mandatory!)?

There's no such thing as a sealed box - small amounts of water WILL get in no matter (and you'll get condensation cycling).  The simplest solution is to provide (protected) ventilation holes on the underside of the container to keep everything dry inside.

I usually bolt the LID of the box to the craft then use the box itself as the lid making easy all-round access to the contents and avoiding leaky box joints near the top.  Cables should all enter from the underside (see above document) to avoid providing an easy path for water.

If your ECU and/or wiring has gotten wet in a salt water environment then you should thoroughly rinse it all with fresh water and leave it open to dry for several days otherwise salt will remain inside things and cause corrosion at a later date.

Thanks Gaz  I will be putting the ECU and plug in to a water sealed box and making wiring longer so I can put in to a better place  + make some more inproments  on sealing wiring  .  Ps the water was running down the wiring and then in to the plug.

the plug on the ecu  was very wet inside

Any ideas where the water got in Tom? You should be able to sit in a ball of spray as standard so if you're having problems from rain then you need to do a little investigation and find the root cause of how it got wet. sorting out all these little niggles helps to achieve long term reliability and gets you using your craft at the slipway not repairing it  :D

To all those who came home early last week from Porthmadog, this last week was even worse. Out of the week there were only three good days, there was so much rain last night, both the Glaslyn and Dwyryd (the rivers that empty into the estuary) were flooding!!
I've come back home till weather improves!!

That's cheered me up, I'll be back next year with a NEW TENT!
