UPDATE.

Hover- in at the Helicopter Museum.

Weston Helicopter Museum charity Hover –in                                                27th June 2026
Bristol Channel / River Avon Cruise   (weather permitting)                          28th June 2026

HOVER-IN

This is a combined hover – in, cruise ( weather permitting ) and charity event to raise funds for the Helicopter Museum.  It is planned as a fun day out with excellent on site facilities, plenty of time to use your craft on a flat grass field, visit the Museum and meet old and new friends.

The hover-in will take place on the Museum’s air strip and there will be plenty of time and space for a relaxed morning on cushion and again after the main events before the show closes.  Hovercraft not being operated will be on display to the public – behind a fence !  The Museum have kindly made their facilities available to us in return for inviting the public to see hovercraft in action.

The event is being arranged in conjunction with the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain and kindly supported by the British Hovercraft Company.  The Museum are providing free entry for two people per exhibited hovercraft.  There is a café and immaculate welfare facilities on site.  The museum has a lovely atmosphere and very helpful, friendly volunteers and staff who will be marshalling and assisting exhibitors.  It is also fascinating for anyone who likes aviation history.

BARB Hovercraft Beach Rescue and Avon Fire Service Hovercraft Rescue have confirmed their attendance and we have  potentially 20 private craft booked in already !

The British Hovercraft Company will be running hovercraft experience rides in a separate area of the site.

We are inviting the HCGB racing fraternity to give a  ‘demonstration race’ for spectators on the main airfield.  This is being arranged by the club and will give a major attraction for the event and draw in tourists ( Weston is a big seaside town ! ) who pay to enter the grounds and museum.  Please can any interested pilots contact Nikki directly?  This will publicise the club and sport and be a complete contrast to the operation of other craft !

There is also a planned  ‘round the ring’ demonstration as happens at classic car shows.
We are inviting a ‘guest of honour’ and also have a key member of the hovercraft industry who has kindly agreed to ‘open’ proceedings – details to be provided later.

CAMPING

There is a well run camp site within half a mile of the Museum. Please mention that you will be exhibiting at the Helicopter Museum charity event as the camp site offer discounts to participants.  Weston has a number of other camp sites and hotels but this one is on the doorstep and has a good facilities

CRUISE  in COMPANY

The event is being sponsored and arranged by the British Hovercraft Company.
It is likely to involve a launch on the River Avon ( for those who remember the Avon Hover Run under the Suspension Bridge in 2010 ! ).  There is parking on site and a slipway.  There are a number of spectacular places to visit but only seaworthy craft should participate as the cruise may involve open water with other boats and possibly commercial traffic in the vicinity.  We hope to have a backup RIB or cruiser available subject to tide times.

Hi Dave, there is a commercial camp site very near the museum so I don't think that would be an issue. If you need secure storage you can leave your craft at our place about 10 miles from the Museum - all main roads.  R

Hiya Ross, I'm interested in attending.  Would it be possible to arrive a day early and leave a day or so later, to break up the travelling.  I have a Sev tec Prospector.  Dave.

Thanks for the various likes and comments.

I know it is far too early to commit to this event but could I have an indication of anyone who at this point, if the weather is good and the stars align, hopes to attend and brief details of the craft they hope to bring - if any.

The Museum want to know asap for publicity purposes.  I've explained that if the weather is bad, turn out will be low but they want something to send out to the press etc.

We already have four hover craft confirmed plus the possibility of a couple of others so we can run the hover-in although more craft would be good.  Hopefully we will have BARB and the Fire Service craft too but they haven't responded yet.

Tx muchly :-)

Hover-in at the Helicopter Museum in Weston super Mare on Saturday 27th June 2026.

The event is free to enter and intended to be a relaxed social event with plenty of opportunity to operate your craft on the flat grass of the old Weston airfield and take part in a low speed untimed manoeuvring competition round the cones.  Aimed at being a fun day out with other enthusiasts and an opportunity to kick skirts and talk hovercraft.

The Helicopter museum are offering free entry for two people per craft and there is a café with facilities on site.  There is a campsite close to the Museum where you can make your own arrangements to stay overnight.  There are hotels and fast food outlets nearby.

We hope to involve the local BARB hovercraft rescue team and will also be inviting the Fire Service to display their craft together with the Coastguard and RNLI.

On Sunday we will try to arrange a cruise for a small number of craft but this is not guaranteed at this stage and will also be dependent on the weather.  This will be for suitably equipped craft and pilots with 4 st engines and acceptable noise levels.

All craft MUST be insured for public liability and will need to show their current cover note to the Museum staff before being permitted to operate.  This is a requirement of the Museum and there can be no exceptions.

With good weather it should be an interesting and fun weekend !
