Loch Awe has many visible crannogs (and probably many more underwater) Crannogs are ancient (up to 5000 year old) man-made islands used to support a dwelling just offshore. They can be either all wood (on piles), all stone and composite as the ones on Loch Awe are (stone island, wooden structure - now gone). The older (and higher) ones often have vegetation growing on they -rooted I assume in the organic material left on the stone. You can sometimes see the remains of the access walkways on the shore. We must have spotted a dozen or more.
