They die after 70000 miles. Head and piston rings. Full rebuild not difficult and parts are getting cheaper. Sold my full car with a rebuilt engine £500 tested with no faults.
Obviously using the wrong engine! Maybe this would be better?

So basically the engines are pretty sh$t then - but the most important thing is they are cheap (for a reason!) so ideal for using in a project then  ::) ::)

All the smart fortwo cars are rear wheel drive, deisel and petrol were made, full auto and semi. I assume you want an auto as the engines going at the back and you don't want to fanny with the linkages etc.
You can pickup a smart for 300 quid with, they suffer from dropping a cylinder. So if you don't mind taking the head off and fixing a valve its an extremly cheap, all aluminium engine setup, with power ranges from 60 to over 100hp.
Not telling why I have been researching this. :)

Warby,
Yes exactly. I want the engine, transmission and suspension.
Basically all the running gear.

All too often you get started down a route and then someone comes along to say "why didn't you use XYZ"..
Often they are right!!.

Eric,
Ta for that but Hyundai ix35 are not that common over here. Not many turn up in scrap yards

Hi Kip, I take it you are thinking along the lines of a polo, ie front wheel drive, engine, gearbox and drive shafts, suspension, etc, or  is it a "complete" front end including bodywork lights etc?

Warby

Maybe I didn't make myself clear.
I just wonder if anyone could point me towards a model of car that has the features I am looking for.
I am not asking if anyone has one for sale.
