The Ultraprop on the Vanguard is run at around half it's full rated speed (and it's tested with ball bearings and other cr$p thrown through it at full rated speed).

In any case, the cone netting on the plans will deflect any large debris and prevent it getting to the blades - maybe the large craft could copy what we do and prevent FOD incidents  ::)

:P   Ian, you're starting to worry me with that huge prop on the Vanguard !    :P

Thats good - if it is definitely an isolated incident then it shouldn't cause the fleet to be grounded. Prop failures are not common but are not unknown in general aviation - a prop was lost from a Dash 8 in Birmingham last year due to a birdstrike.

It was apparently FOD - Island Express is back in service. May take a while to get Freedom 90 up and running again - and shows the company have little in the way of redundancy for when such events occur. I think the new craft are due this year.

This is the second similar event  :( The MCA will be all over it.

Wonder if they might begin to consider our (more conservative) view of safe propeller speeds to be more sensible next time we are talking about it???
