Tidy Osprey 5 for sale on eBay...........nice!
« on: Feb 27, 2019, 9:59 am »

I happened to see this craft last week. First time I have really been up close to a MK 1. Nice craft!
This particular one need the engine changing (spare block supplied I believe that is good) and a few bits like the rudder pivot points need sorting but seems very much 'up together'.
Someone is gonna get a bargain alright!!!!  :D

Link to craft
O5's were quite nicely made craft - unfortunately the performance didn't match the look ::) .. The Mk2 version had a widened nose in attempt to try to improve the vicious plough in the Mk1 had - didn't really work too well!  IMHO the design was a step too far for an integrated craft - too big and they tend to eat engines (first lift is way up the rev range of a typical car engine and they need to operate at around 3.5-4K rpm (on a 5.5K engine) at cruise (which is why a car engine doesn't like it).  I've yet to see one actually working reasonably well (are there any in regular use anywhere?).

It'll sell OK because of the looks but my view is that it's best avoided.

In fairness brian Reynolds worked ok.
Did plow in but it did work.

... occasionally  ;) (I helped recover it twice <edit> THREE times!).  He used to ride around with the nose down all the time in an attempt to reduce the perpetual spray.

Nice looking craft and the MK2 even better. That MK1 is probably only a museum piece unless you chop the back off and fit separate lift along with a bigger thrust fan. Good project for someone with time.

Kip could probably say when this MK 1 was built. Number 14 I believe.
Heavy craft but has lasted well.
Probably needs a high revving as standard car engine then.

The only one I've had dealings with was on the Avon Cruise we arranged a few years ago.  It was toe curlingly noisy, even half a mile away.  It worked superbly but the monumental din would have made it any long term use nearly impossible if you wanted to avoid complaints. That aside, a nice craft.

Purchsser wants to fit a bow mounted lift engine too.
